While on a trip to India to learn about economic developments, @IMFnews colleagues visited #Odisha’s craft museum @kalahoomibbsr—a world-class set up that shows how art is an integral part of the regional culture.
The museum celebrates the craftsmanship of our artisans by putting on display their breath-taking masterpieces. Divided into 2 blocks, the museum has a display area and a live section. The display area focuses on galleries about Handicrafts and Handlooms from around the state while the live section is equipped with an open air theatre as well as separate workshop zones. Kalabhoomi is built using local raw materials such as the laterite stone which can still be seen in some of the oldest monuments around the state.

The word Pattachitra is derived from the Sanskrit words Patta and Chitra. While the word patta means a strip prepared by combining two or more pieces of cloth and glue, and Chitra means painting. The work of beautifully painted pattachitra first originated from Puri. Based on the different mythologies and legends of Shree Jagannath temple, Puri these paintings are made as souvenirs for pilgrims.

Stone carving is practiced by artisans mainly in Puri, Bhubaneswar and Lalitgiri in the Cuttack district, though some carvings can be found in Khiching in the Mayurbhanj District. Stone carving is one of the major handicrafts of Odisha. Tussar silk sarees of Gopalpur village in Jajpur district are world famous due to the specialised weaving techniques adopted by the traditional weavers. The Tussar yarn is obtained from silkworms found mostly in wild forests that breed on local trees like Sal, Asan and Arjun. Tussar silk is a lot more textured than any other variety of Silk. The fabric is also cooler and is a lot more porous, therefore, breathable. Women of all age groups love the fabric.

Discovered a wonderful new place in Bhubaneswar - Kalabhoomi, Odisha Crafts Museum. Hope it will add a place to taste my favourite Odiya craft…. Food !!!
An incredible aspect of Odisha's craft heritage is it's vibrant colours used in applique craft often depicting stories from Hindu mythology. In this exhibit at Kalabhoomi you see an artist's conception of depicting Krishna with his gopis in an unconventional way. @kalabhoomibbsr
Is it easy to sum up 5,000 years of cultural history? No. Yet @kalabhoomibbsr does it brilliantly. I can’t think of a better way to learn about #Odisha’s rich cultural legacy than to visit the Kala Bhoomi Crafts Museum. I only wish I had more time to explore!
It was a golden opportunity for Kinder Orland students to explore Odisha's architecture & cultural heritage at Kalabhoomi.
